The DC Comics Universe is the home of The Justice League, the Teen Titans and numerous other superheroes and non-powered characters. DC was formed from a merger of National Allied Publications (responsible for Superman) and Detective Comics (responsible for Batman) in the 1940s and this later morphed into DC Comics. DC is now a subsidiary of the multi-national conglomerate, Time Warner.

The Marvel Comics Universe is the home of The Avengers, The X-Men, Spider-Man and various other teams and characters. Previously known as Timely and then Atlas, the company became Marvel in 1961 and has maintained a strong brand image ever since. Marvel has been a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company since 2009. All imprints, lines, reprints and collaborations such as Epic, Max and Icons, can be found in the Marvel category.

Dark Horse Comics was founded in 1986 by comic shop owner, Mike Richardson. The company is perhaps best known for being the home of Hellboy and related titles, and for producing numerous comics based on films, such as Aliens. Dark Horse prides itself on being a publisher that allows writers and artists to have strong creative control over all stages of publication.

Image Comics was founded in 1992 by a group of professional artists who wanted to publish purely creator-owned comics and be paid fairly for their work. The company has gone through some major changes since then but its basic aims remain intact. Image currently has five major houses: Todd McFarlane Productions, Top Cow Productions, Shadowline Comics, Skybound Entertainment and Image Central.
